William H. Martin - a successful and rich trick photographer
It is around this time that one of pioneers of trick photography and special effects in postcards was William H. "Dad" Martin. He had a studio in Ottawa, Kansas and came upon the idea of using photo tricks to create exaggerated post cards for sale. His post cards were of quality that it was difficult to detect traces of manipulation or how it was joined together from various photos. His post cards were so popular that he sold his studio to concentrate on the post cards. By May of 1909, the Martin Post Card Company reportedly churned out some ten thousand cards a day. So rich in fact that he sold off the business in 1912 and founded another company.

The secret to creating these pictures is to simply jump and freeze the action with your camera. Again, a technique that is very simple to use but takes time to master.

The main element in freezing time with your camera is the shutter speed, but other settings like aperture and ISO matters. A fast shutter speed freezes a moving object, but requires more light. You'll need to balance and adjust these elements to ensure that you can freeze an object without blurring it, otherwise it ruins the illusion. This type of shot will make your pictures come to life by creating a fantasy-like image, mysterious in nature and stunningly beautiful. The biggest trick in perfecting this type of shot is to use a tripod, capturing a perfectly still image is essential if you want maximum effect. Choose a setting such as a water stream or waterfall, bright lights (such as streetlights) or even fog.

Set the length of your exposure using the camera controls; then set the shutter speed to a few seconds to capture the image perfectly. Use a remote control rather than pressing the capture button manually for best effect.

Capture the Ultimate HDR Image

To create this type of trick photography and special effects, you'll need Photoshop. A High-Dynamic Range image takes some time to perfect, but this method is used by the best in the industry. You'll see this in nearly any magazine you open.

For best results, it's suggested that you take no less than 3 images of the same landscape using the AEB setting (Auto-Exposure Bracketing), which will take different shots all with a different exposure setting. Once again, use a tripod for best effect. Upload your images into your HDR processing software (like Photoshop), which will automatically be combined. 6. Catch people off-guard

Most of us tend to see the world from the same perspective because we all stand upright. Take photos from a low angle and you will see how different the world looks from the point of view of a child or pet. If you're taking forced perspective photos, then changing the angle of your camera can sometimes dramatically alter the end results.

For normal photography, you want to capture natural emotions and reactions. While this also works for trick photography, I do find that going completely the opposite tend to produce interesting results. Because trick photography is sometimes surprising, using a totally out-of-place emotion or reaction further reinforces that message.
