Although you don't always need a state-of-the-art camera in order to make use of trick photography techniques, it can sure help a lot and save massive amounts of time if you do own one. For any photographer who is serious about photography and just starting out, I highly recommend investing in the latest Adobe Photoshop, a software program that will add new dimensions to every shot. Some of these trick photography methods and other special effects require Photoshop to perfect, but with some time and practice you might not even find it necessary.
Getting a Miniature Effect with Tilt-Shift Lens
If you like taking overhead shots of your friends, family, city or landscape, then you're going to love this. Ever wondered how professional photographers make pictures look like miniature figurines? Well, soon you'll know the secrets of how they do it.
The trick here is to create an extremely shallow depth by shifting and tilting the lens, found in front of your digital SLR's lens for some cameras. This will bring forth certain images by lighting them up while other less important imagery is blurred out. Focus more on tilt control rather than shifting to make things easier for yourself. Cameras with this function don't come cheap, but you can also create this effect using Photoshop or other imaging software out there.
Creating a Mysterious Long Exposure Shot
This is one of my personal favorite trick photography techniques, the long exposure shot is generally taken at night using fast shutter speeds and freeze action which can be found on some pricey cameras on the market today.
This type of shot will make your pictures come to life by creating a fantasy-like image, mysterious in nature and stunningly beautiful. The biggest trick in perfecting this type of shot is to use a tripod, capturing a perfectly still image is essential if you want maximum effect. Choose a setting such as a water stream or waterfall, bright lights (such as streetlights) or even fog.
Set the length of your exposure using the camera controls; then set the shutter speed to a few seconds to capture the image perfectly. Use a remote control rather than pressing the capture button manually for best effect.
Capture the Ultimate HDR Image
To create this type of trick photography and special effects, you'll need Photoshop. A High-Dynamic Range image takes some time to perfect, but this method is used by the best in the industry. You'll see this in nearly any magazine you open.
For best results, it's suggested that you take no less than 3 images of the same landscape using the AEB setting (Auto-Exposure Bracketing), which will take different shots all with a different exposure setting. Once again, use a tripod for best effect. Upload your images into your HDR processing software (like Photoshop), which will automatically be combined. Look for the setting called "tone mapping", which will allow you to edit your photo, colors' intensity and luminance to allow you to create the ultimate trick photography image.
